Nick Urankar: Why I never Gave Up Training while I was Constantly Failing

"So now that you made it back… are you done?"

That question hit me harder than I expected.

In 2011, I qualified for the CrossFit Games for the first time. It felt like the start of something huge—like my future was set.

I believed that from that point on, I’d always make it back.

So I went all in.

I trained every waking moment.
I opened a gym.
I had a 2-year-old and was married—but any free time I had went to one thing: getting better.

Then came reality.

The Setbacks That Almost Broke Me

2012 – Didn’t qualify.
2013 – Didn’t qualify.
2014 – Didn’t qualify.

Three years. Three crushing failures.

After that third one, my wife sat me down and asked me something I wasn’t ready to hear:

"Should you keep doing this?"

That hit hard. But she wasn’t wrong. Something had to change.

I had two choices:
🔹 Keep training the same way and hope for a different outcome.
🔹 Step back, make a plan, and get smarter.

I chose the second.

I set strict training windows—when I was training, I gave it my all. But when I wasn’t, I was fully present for my family and business.

The crazy thing?
I actually got better.

2015: My Hardest Test Yet

Regionals came around. Everything was going well—until I bombed a workout in the exact same way I had before.

I was so far out of qualifying that it felt like déjà vu.

The thought crept in… Was this happening again?

Then my wife looked at me and said:
"Go win. If you want to move on, there’s no other option. I believe in you."

That was all I needed.

🔥 I went out and made history—jumping from the farthest position out to qualify for the Games in history (at that time).

"Are You Done Now?"

After making it back, people started asking me:

"So now that you made it… are you done?"

I thought they were crazy.

"You think I spent 4 YEARS fighting for this just to call it quits? I’m just finding my stride!"

That’s the thing… when you chase something you truly want, people will question you.
They’ll tell you it’s time to quit.
They’ll make you doubt yourself.

But they don’t get to define success for YOU.

You do.
